Mr Tan is a colorectal surgeon with a specialist interest in pelvic floor disease and laparoscopic colorectal surgery.  He is a clinical academic, and holds a Senior Lectureship with Imperial College London.

Having trained at the University College Medical School, Emile completed his basic and higher surgical training in and around London, having also completed a years’ fellowship at St Marks’ Hospital in Harrow.  His training includes experience in laparoscopic colorectal and general surgery, pelvic floor surgery, in particular sacral neuromodulation, as well as locally advanced and recurrent cancer, for which he spent 1 year at the Royal Marsden, and a further 6 months at St Marks’.  Emile started the colorectal surgical pelvic floor unit together with Professor Paris Tekkis at Chelsea and Westminster and now runs it as pelvic floor lead, offering the full range of investigations through a one-stop clinic, including anorectal physiology and endoanal ultrasound scanning.

He has a particular interest in sacral nerve stimulation for faecal incontinence, for which the unit is fully commissioned.  His research portfolio includes low anterior resection syndrome, chronic constipation, faecal incontinence, obstructed defecation, and the functional aspects of ultra-low rectal cancer surgery.
